Overview

About TSMU

Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU) is a public university in the Georgian capital, founded in 1918 as the medical faculty of Tbilisi State University. It is one of the best-known medical schools in Georgia and one of the few places where medicine, dentistry and pharmacy can all be studied in English at one institution.

International students study in TSMU's English-language Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. Medicine (MD) is a six-year one-cycle programme, Dental Medicine (DMD) lasts five years, and Pharmacy is a four-year Bachelor's programme. TSMU also runs a separate American MD programme, taught in English over six years at a higher fee.

Why students choose TSMU

Medicine, dentistry and pharmacy in English
Three English-taught pathways plus an American MD track, all at the same university and in the same city.
Published tuition
TSMU publishes its own international fee schedule, which makes it easier to compare against agent quotes and spot padded figures.
Clinical skills teaching
TSMU's published American MD curriculum lists case-based teaching, simulated scenarios and manikins, standardised patients and OSCE examinations alongside clinical rotations.
No national exams for foreign applicants
Applicants who completed secondary education abroad can enrol without Georgia's Unified National Exams and sit an English test instead.

Admission

How to apply to TSMU

You do not apply to TSMU yourself. Contact us and we handle the application for you. Below are the requirements the university sets. Foreign applicants who finished school abroad skip Georgia's national exams, but need their education recognised by NCEQE.

  • Foreign citizens who completed secondary education abroad can enrol without Georgia's Unified National Exams (Law on Higher Education, Article 52).
  • Applicants sit TSMU's English test unless exempt. Exemptions apply to holders of an English-medium school, college or university completion certificate, or a valid IELTS 6.5+ or TOEFL 90+.
  • TSMU offers an optional paid online admission service (general admission: US$170 standard or US$220 expedited at the time of review). It is separate from tuition. We tell you which fees apply to your case before anything is paid.
  • For the 2026-27 intake TSMU accepted applications until September 2026 or until places were filled.

Skills and simulation teaching
The curriculum documents describe teaching with simulated scenarios and manikins, standardised patients, role play and laboratory sessions, with OSCE-style practical exams used for assessment.
Clinical teaching in Tbilisi hospitals
Medical and dental students move into clinical teaching in affiliated hospitals and clinics in the capital, which has the largest concentration of specialist hospitals in the country.
Early clinical exposure
The published programme documents say students are equipped with communication and clinical skills from the first year, rather than waiting until the clinical years.

Accommodation

Where TSMU students live

Most international students rent shared apartments in Saburtalo and nearby districts, close to the university and the metro. Ask TSMU in writing whether dormitory places are available for your intake before you plan around them.

Lifestyle

Student life in Tbilisi

Tbilisi is Georgia's capital and by far its largest city, with over a million residents. Most of the country's English-taught medical, dental and business programmes are based here, so it has the biggest international student community, the widest choice of housing and the best-connected hospitals.

Around TSMU

The main TSMU campus is on Vazha-Pshavela Avenue in Saburtalo, one of Tbilisi's busiest student districts. The Vazha-Pshavela metro station is close by, and the area has supermarkets, cafés, gyms and pharmacies within walking distance.

Because TSMU has a large international cohort, South Asian, Middle Eastern and African student communities are well established, along with the shops and restaurants that serve them. That makes the first months far easier than in a smaller city.

Getting around
A two-line metro, buses and shared minibuses cover most of the city. A single ride costs about 1 lari and a monthly pass is typically 40-50 lari, so most students never need a car. Ride-hailing apps such as Bolt and Yandex Go are widely used for late-night trips.
Climate
Hot summers, cold winters with occasional snow, and mild spring and autumn. Student housing is centrally heated or gas-heated, so pack a proper winter coat rather than thermal layers.
Food and daily costs
Georgian staples such as khachapuri, khinkali and lobio are inexpensive, and supermarkets and open-air markets sell everyday groceries cheaply. Vegetarian options are easy to find because fasting traditions mean most restaurants offer meat-free dishes. South Asian restaurants and grocers have opened in the city.
Safety and community
Georgia is widely regarded as a safe country for students, with the usual city precautions applying at night and in crowded places. Tbilisi has a large international student community, which makes settling in much easier in the first semester.

Fit

Is TSMU right for you?

Best for: Students who want a large, established medical or dental school in the capital, are comfortable with a competitive peer group, and want published fees to compare.

Check before you pay

  • Confirm the English MD or DMD programme's current accreditation with the National Center for Educational Quality Enhancement (NCEQE) and, for Nepal, check the programme against Nepal Medical Council requirements. See our MBBS in Georgia guide.
  • Use TSMU's own published tuition figures. Agents sometimes quote higher numbers that bundle accommodation, visa work and travel.
  • Budget separately for the application service fee, residence permit, health insurance and accommodation.
